Kippax Village
Letters Page
This is your page where you can let off steam and air your views, so don't just sit there, get typing in with your gripes and praises - it's your chance to be famous world-wide! The webmaster cannot get involved with matters relating to local village politics, however there is a meeting of the Kippax Village Community Forum every last Thursday in the month. Details can be found on the meetings page. Why not come along if you have something to say about how your village is run.
hi CAN YOU HELP ME ?
I'm ROGER ANDREW and I live110 miles south of you. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Clayton who was born in BUTT LANE Kippax in the 1850's and i would love to find out more about her
I would like it known that this village appears to have no place for young children.

How I come to this conclusion is that our local councillors and local kippax forum planning person have rejected plans to open a new children's soft play centre.

It is a known fact that we need this establishment but whilst we seem to have a labour run council who's priority is cosmetic improvements then this family village is doomed.

I am disgusted and I know other folk in the village are too. I also know that our planning person on the forum is holding back on the future of a traditional Kippax. I wonder what our councillors actually wants for this village? Maybe they want more empty shops and reduced business and what is happening to the CO-OP? Ahhh more questions we will never know because we are only the residents!

I hope this will be placed on the website for others to read.

Yours gratefully

A Disgusted kippax family.

I was born in Kippax in 1940 joined the Royal Navy in 1956 since then I have only made the odd visit home .I hear that a dig was done on the old wooded fort, next to the church but cannot find any record of it on the net I would be very much obliged if you could give me any information of this .I visited Kippax last week and was saddened to see all the buildings that have appeared over the past few years ,I was born in Robinson lane and still picture the old pond field and oak tree alas no longer there,I now live in a small village near Hull but the old Kippax is still my home ..
Hoping to hear from you soon
John Collett

I recently visited Kippax seeking information on Joseph Carter, my greatx4 grandfather. I found his grave in St Marys churchyard outside the South door. The grave marker has himself, died 1844 and his wife Elizabeth (d.1868) and sons George (d.1823) and Joseph (d. 1825). I would like to hear from anyone who has researched this family as the parish registers show a plethora of Joseph and John Carters from this period, and I can't see who is whom! Please reply to haskins0@supanet.com.
Many thanks, Neville Haskins (mother was nee Carter!!)

As a local lad I spent all my life in Kippax, know I have moved to Ireland over 7 years ago it's great to see this web site of the old village.

I am proud of my home roots and it's pleasing to see the old place on this site - well done.

Most of my 20's were playing rugby at the welfare on Longdike Lane, with Keith Brooks (Pak), Hamish Boyle, Shackeltons, Wardy, and not forgetting Paddy (Mark Collins). One of the great sides Kippax Rugby ever had.

It was not long ago I was in the village with my new girlfriend (from Ireland) to show her the sites such as Billy wood and Cheeny Basin and not forgetting Kev Higgins Barbers shop! - she loved the place, it's nice to show her and my son the place I grew up in and have many good friends and good times. Keep the village looking good and hello to all who know me.
Best Wishes
Chris Nelmes (Kippax Rugby's finest player!)

Hull.

My Great Great Grandfather, Richard Watson was born Kippax 1778 and died Castleford 1839
The Watson family farmed the land around Yorhshire for centuries
Our Richard Watson was reputed to be a Master Mariner with his own sloop trading between Hull and Baltic ports. He also owned Keels used to transport goods between Goole and Leeds on the canal
Richard in the early 1800s was the owner and/or both the Licensee of the 'Keel Inn' at Castleford and the 'Griffin' at Allerton Bywater
Richard married a Dinah Sandford of Boston,Linconshire and sired six boys and one girl[Elizabeth].
I would like to find out where Richard is buried and indeed any information on the family.
Thankyou, John Watson Riordan
George Senior
I am researching my family tree and find that my great great grandfather's birth was registered in kippax in 1841 (although on the 1881 census his birthplace was Thornhill Lees). His name was George Senior his wife was Rachel and they a son John who was a mining surveyor. George was at one time (around 1881) publican at the Flower Pot, Mirfield. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Great web site by the way.

Hi again
I sent a letter in a while ago and said I would send a photo of the Kippax carnival when I found it...well, here it is. Kippax Common won and I think it was the year of 1963 - click here to see

By the way, i'm the little red indian on the end!! Haha aged about 3yrs old.

When I have been getting of the 140 bus on a afternoon over the last weeks I have seen kids nearly knocked down and cars were not even slowing down overtaking.I think the council should do some work on getting a crossing made at cross hills for the publics safety.

To whom it may concern

Fantastic!!!

I have recently moved to Kippax and have enjoyed my first 4 months here. I would just like to congratulate whoever it was that set up this website which I have enjoyed reading through. It has been informative and well designed and I certainly intend to contribute when I have something to contribute.

You mention that suggestions are encouraged. Being new to the area and in need of major bathroom work it is difficult for me to find a recommended plumber, electrician or plasterer local to the area and with a good reputation for quality and price. I would like to see some sort of message board where people can post comments or ask for help from other users.

Kind regards

Pete Heys

Thanks for creating a long overdue site. As a born and bred Kippiser I have been tracing my family back and found the reference in E M Logge's lecture about the Royal Oak (Kippax House) being the home of the Clayton's interesting. In Mr Pickles book Kippax in pictures page 55 there is a photo of the Oak "before it was a public house, home of Dr. Enfield". However in Baines directory of 1822 it lists the Royal Oak as a public house along with it's landlord. This is before the days of photography. Any thoughts on this? Can Mr Pickles have a think on this? On your links page I think you should add http://www.familysearch.org This gives free access to the full 1891 census and allows searces within Kippax only. It's much better than the PRO site. Keep up the good work!

Is there anyone out there with a very long memory, who can tell me what became of a girl I went to kippax North J.M.I. school with a very long time ago?
Her name was Anita Hallmark (probably married now),and we both left in 1970 and went to Garforth comp.We both left there in 1975 and went our separate ways
They lived at the top end of Valley road, but moved around that time, further up the village I think. Her parents used to run the Post -office in Main street
I was dragged kicking and screaming, by my parents to live in Whitkirk, but have kept a deep affection for the old place.
If anybody has any information I would be very grateful,

Garry Atack, Ex Pat

Just had a first quick look at the Kippax Village website. It is looking
good and very interesting. I was wondering if the website is going to have a
message/bulletin board at some point in the future. I find the one on
www.southmilford.co.uk quite interesting and am sure we would find it useful in Kippax too.

The website has certainly made me want to look at the reams of old documents which I recently received from my building society relating to the builders and landowners involved in the sale of my house (Leeds Road) some are dated 1935. I am sure your website will help me fill in some gaps. Thanks, Angela

THANKYOU FOR YOUR EMAIL. THE COTTAGES WE REFER TO ARE ST MARYS COTTAGES CHURCH LANE KIPPAX. THEY WERE BUILT IN 1686 AND THATS PRETTY MUCH ALL WE KNOW. THE INFO WE HOLD IS FROM 1900 ONWARDS. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. PAUL AND SHEILA
Can anyone pffer any help on this one please? email the webmaster

Hi, just come across your site while researching my family history. Love it! I was born in Kippax in 1960, I attended Kippax North School and was one of the first pupils to go to Brigshaw Comp in 1972.
I am trying to research my Walton family history. My Dad Granville has lived in Kippax since he was about 2yrs old. Whenever we went out for a drink in the central club he would always have someone come up and ask his advice on something to do with the pit. He worked at Allerton pit. He is now 78 and still looking good on it. We are trying to find anything out about his grandfather Joseph William who was married to Myra....a long time ago I know but if anyone knows anything about the family I would appreciate hearing from them.
I saw the carnival day mentioned, I can remember when Kippax Common won, round about 1963. When I find it i'll post a photo on the site. Keep up the good work and I look forward to returning and reading more!
Yours Liz Mackay ( Elizabeth Walton),

We like your website but are baffled as to the location of Donald's kettle! Even some of the old time kippax folk do not seem to know of its wherabouts - please help!
Thanks

(Webmaster replies,"In answer to your query re; "Donald's Kettle" you are the first one to spot the deliberate mistake! The grave of Donald and the kettle is situated on the South bank of the River Aire at Methley about 150 yards downstream of the bridge. I couldn't resist putting this picture on as it shows just what some folk think of their pets - enough to give them a special place to rest."
